For most people, picking up the phone to call a customer and ask them for money isn’t the highlight of their day. In fact, in most overworked and understaffed credit departments, collection calls are placed dead last or fall off the “to-do list” altogether.


Why? Reasons vary. But basically, the truth is that making collection calls takes most people out of their comfort zone. They don’t feel confident with the process, so they fear embarrassment or failure.


If collection is part of your job responsibilities, here’s some good news. You can become more comfortable and more successful by following a few tips from the collection pros on our staff.


#1 always be prepared – generally and specifically

Be ready to handle excuses


Before making your next collection call, take time to compile a list of common customer excuses, matching them with effective rebuttals. Write them down on file cards or include them in your computer scripting. Group them by category and keep them handy. Exchange ideas with others in your department. Then, when the customer tries to end the call by offering an excuse, you can take control by countering with a well-thought-out reply and returning to the purpose of your call — collecting the debt.


Here are some examples from our collection experts to get you started:


Customer: the check is in the mail.


Collector: great! May I have the check number, amount, and date it was mailed so I can ensure it is posted correctly?


Customer: I have a cash flow problem right now.


Collector: I understand that times are difficult. Can I set you up on a payment plan, or can you make at least a partial payment today?


Customer: I don’t have a copy of the invoice.


Collector: I’ll fax the invoice over right now. Will you be mailing the check today?


Arm yourself with the facts


Before you pick up the phone, it’s critical that you have all the specifics of the debt you’re calling about. Having the facts in front of you keeps you in control. You don’t want the conversation to get derailed by a question you can’t answer. Many customers know how to use this to their advantage. Suddenly they can’t discuss payment on their account without details you don’t have and they don’t “have in front of them” either. So, the call is over.


If you hear yourself saying, “I’ll have to get back to you on that,” you’ve just given the customer an extension without a commitment to pay ” and you’ll have to start from square one with him when you call back.


At a minimum, be sure to have the following in front of you before you make the call:



  • Exact amount owed

  • Terms of sale

  • Products/services purchased

  • Payment due date

  • Other open invoices, even those not yet past due



Know who you’re calling


It’s also helpful to brief yourself on the customer’s payment record with your company, as well as any other payment history you may have available to you. Do they usually pay on time? Are payments getting slower and slower? Is past-due payment uncharacteristic of this customer?


#2 think positively


Your mental state has a strong impact both on how you handle the debtor and how they respond to you. Treat each call as if it was your first call of a very good day. Put a smile on your face. If you were irritated on the previous call, take a few minutes to calm yourself and start afresh. The customer will respond to your tone. Your upbeat mood will be contagious and you are likely to get a more positive response from the customer.


#3 speak professionally and authoritatively


Most of us take our speaking voices for granted. But the tone, pitch, inflection, and even the speed at which you talk can have a powerful influence on your listener. Think about typical news anchors or radio commentators. They have voices that command attention. With a little effort, you can develop one too.


Try recording a general collection call opening and then listen to yourself. Make adjustments as needed, and try again. This will not only improve how you come across on the phone, but it will also build confidence. It does take a little time and extra work, but remember, success is strongly linked to preparation.


Here are a few hints that might help:



  • Don’t chew gum or drink when you’re on the phone

  • Speak a bit slower and enunciate

  • Use a lower-pitched voice

  • Pause more often

  • Make sure you pronounce the ending consonants of words and don’t slur

  • Smile while you talk — although the person on the end of the line can’t see it, they will hear it; and everyone responds more openly to a smile than to a scowl



Adhering to these simple tips will greatly improve your telephony skills and give you the authority to command the conversation.


#4 take control and don’t let go


You can manage the call in such a way that you control the customer’s response. In addition to what we already mentioned about preparation and voice, here are some other tricks of the trade:


Address the customer by name throughout the conversation. This shows respect on your part and commands their attention. Be careful not to overdo it though, or it will start to sound contrived and annoying.


Make the customer right, even when they are wrong. You may not agree with what they’re saying, but you can still validate it. After an objection or excuse, say, “I can understand why you feel that way.” or, “I can certainly see how something like that might happen.” validating what the customer has to say maintains open lines of communication. Understanding their point of view, even as you share yours, will disarm the customer’s defensiveness.


Ask open-ended questions. Try to get the customer to give you as much information as possible. For instance, bank information is critical, yet many customers may not want to share it. Instead of coming straight out and asking, “where is your account?” try “will you be sending a check or a money order?” he will usually say “a check.” you respond, “that’s fine. So we don’t miss it, what bank will it be drawn on?”


Listen carefully and take notes. You will get clues as to whether the customer is serious about paying. You’ll also have ammunition for your next call and will be ready to counter any excuses that may have been tried in the past.


Use silence. Count slowly to five before responding to a customer statement, and wait several seconds after asking a question. Leaving blank spaces in the conversation compels the debtor to fill them in.


Stay focused. Some customers will try to get you off track by complaining about service, or somehow shifting the blame for their delinquency to you. Be polite, even validate their opinion. But always bring them right back to the point of your call — getting paid the money rightfully due to your company.

If a customer starts yelling or using abusive language, stay calm. Try reminding them that you cannot help resolve the situation if they are yelling.


If that doesn’t work, say something like, “this obviously isn’t a good time for you. When can I call you back?”


Or you could try a tactic one of ABC-amega’s collectors employs. Say, “could you hang on a moment? I can’t understand what you’re saying.” put the phone down for several seconds, then pick it up again stating, “I’m back.” that few seconds of silence will often calm the customer down and you can get on with the discussion more reasonably.


#5 nail things down


A call that doesn’t result in a commitment from the customer is a wasted call. If you can’t get them to commit to payment in full, get a promise of something — a partial payment or a call back with a payment date. Make sure you control the timing. Don’t ask, “when can you get back to me on this?” rather, ask “will you be calling me by wednesday?”


Don’t hang up the phone without summarizing the results of the call: their commitment; your expectations; and, the consequences if your expectations are not met. Emphasize the urgency of the matter. It’s easy for the customer to forget your call as soon as he puts down the receiver, especially if they don’t think you were really concerned about the outcome.


Stress the importance that the customer call you back on the date they promise payment — to let you know the check has been sent. If they fail to call, the payment likely didn’t happen. You won’t waste time waiting for a check that was never mailed.


And finally, if the customer doesn’t follow through on their commitment, make sure you follow through on the consequences. If you don’t, they will never take you seriously.


#6 learn to be flexible


Following the above advice will help improve the effectiveness of your collection calls ” but there is no magic bullet in debt collection. Every customer is different. What works really well with one, may get you nowhere with another. Listen carefully to the customer and you will pick up clues to the best way to handle each situation.

Actually it’s not like that; I mean the easy peasy part.


I signed up an account and submitted my documents — let me check my emails to see if I’m right!


Ok, I signed up and asked them how I can receive the bonus and they start sending me a bunch of emails asking crazy stuff.


What documents are asked for?


I tried on two separate occasions to get the AMEGA no deposit bonus.


They’ve named the bonus mania and it’s a suitable name for that because it turns you into a maniac in the process of document verification.


First attempt to get the bonus


Well, this is the first email I received:


You need to send a colored photo of the first page of your passport next to the sheet of paper with the current date that should be clearly visible on this photo. Unfortunately, scanned copies are not accepted for verification. Photographs should not be cut. The photo of the main page of the passport should be fully seen and the information should be clearly readable.


Ok, a little weird but I had seen that once before so it doesn’t seem scam yet. Actually it can be a sign of strictness of their rules which is not bad at all.


AMEGA FX is not a regulated broker so when they have such strict protocols, it’s considered a good sign, I assumed.


Anyway, I sent them what they’d asked for but received this:


Dear client please read the requirements and provide us with the needed photo.


I was pretty sure that I sent them correctly but I checked them again. Everything seemed correct to me but no problem I’ll send them again, I told myself.


I sent them again and I think we went through that conversation a few times — I’m not gonna give in.


Finally, they accepted that.


I think they came to the conclusion that this dude is not gonna give up soon, we’ll knock him down in the next rounds.


They didn’t ask for anything until the next day when I received a new email:


You should send us photos of utility bills for the last 3 months (e.G. Payments for gas, water, electricity). Your name should be seen on it. You may also provide us with the photo of the bank statement where your name and your address are seen.


Unfortunately scanned copies and photo copies are not accepted for verification.


Again, I haven’t seen a broker ask for both a utility bill and bank statement. One of them has always been enough while trying to have your documents confirmed.


I also didn’t know why AMEGA support hadn’t asked for this one in the first place when they’d asked for my passport.


As I’m looking at my emails, as if I hadn’t seen the bank statement part so I sent them my utility bill.


Surprisingly they accept that and didn’t even ask for the bank statement!


Again, one day lasts before they send me the next email.


I’m pretty sure now that they do that intentionally.


I’ll give my thoughts at the end of this post.


The next day I received another email related to the process of getting AMEGA no deposit bonus.


Your face fully, your ID card in a hand and the dialogue with the security department opened on any device should be clearly seen on one photo.


I was already fed up with the process of exchanging emails that first was time-consuming, because I had to do every part several times, and second it had taken too long — 5 days by the time.

What’s wrong with you guys!

An entire two-page spread must be visible in each photo.


Ok, at least they paraphrase the first one, not copy-paste.


**I was trying to convince myself to keep doing the stupid process again.**


I sent them the documents and surprisingly there were no extra demands for that, however, the next request was on the way.


The next document was the one that I hadn’t sent yet:


You should send us photos of the bank statement where your name and your address are seen.


…again they start nagging and not accepting that because they found that not clear enough.


I tried to recheck it by zooming in, everything was clear crystal.


I don’t know how many times they played this game and I naively fell into that trap.


You’re overreacting, I told myself.


I tried to take a better photo and convinced them that the bank statement is a printed version and that’s the highest quality I can provide.


Finally, they accepted or at least didn’t say anything.


But asked for the crazy acrobatic photo again


I was asked to take a selfie while holding my passport next to my head and my computer screen shows the dialogue I had with them.


I can’t help but laugh every time I think of that moment when I was trying to pull off the selfie of myself while holding my passport with one hand close to my face and setting my head on the laptop screen so the stupid email was visible and taking a photo of this mess with another hand. �� �� ��


Anyway, after doing gymnastics for 15 minutes I finally got to take that damn photo…


It wasn’t too clear but you can read everything, moreover, they already have a photo of my passport but I knew they asked it again so I sent the photo with this:


This was the hardest task you’ve given me so far. I don’t know how I could take that photo. Just don’t ask me to do this one again. What’s the next one?


I burst out laughing when I just saw this email again. Look how desperate I am �� ��


As expected, AMEGA security department didn’t cave in and sent another email.


**really you thought they were going to surrender easily just because you asked them? **


It was a shot in the dark, but didn’t work out.


You should send the photo of your document near your face on the background of the mailing with security department of the better quality. All the data should be visible and readable.


At this point, I decided to make a wise decision and give up otherwise I probably had to send them a photo of me wearing a bikini making out with the name of the security department on my screen…


This was just the beginning of this bonus, who knows what happens if you can miraculously get it and trade with it. If you can make a profit out of it, how on earth they let you withdraw your profits?


That’s why I think you should avoid AMEGA FX no deposit bonus if you don’t want to waste your time and energy going through all that craziness.

Maintenance program


If you purchased an omega auto care vehicle service agreement (agreement) you also receive benefits with the omega maintenance program (program). Coverage under the program begins thirty (30) days after the date shown as the agreement purchase date shown on the declarations page in the covered vehicle section of the agreement you purchased from the seller. This program expires when thirteen (13) months from the agreement purchase date.


MAINTENANCE BENEFITS:



  1. OIL CHANGES: oil changes up to 5 quarts (maximum three (3) oil changes during the term of the agreement at $40.00 for each service); however, if synthetic oil is used, blends, or for diesels, larger V-8 type vehicles you will receive a $55.00 discount.

  2. BRAKES PADS/SHOES: $100.00 or $130.00 on select vehicles as follows all trucks, SUV’s, AWD’s, diesels, and all models of acura, audi, BMW, cadillac, infiniti, jaguar, lexus, lincoln, mercedes, saab, volkswagen, and volvo toward the replacement of brake pads/shoes (A labor charge may apply).

  3. BATTERY: $100.00 credit towards replacement of a failed battery. Limit one (1) battery per agreement (installation charge may apply). Not valid if replacement of battery is in conjunction with or due to another repair.

  4. COOLING SYSTEM MAINTENANCE & LUBE: drain/refill, pressure check, inspect hoses, belts, clamps, & lube chassis. WE will pay for (1) service during the term of the agreement up to $40.00.

  5. SAFETY INSPECTION: includes wiper blades replacement with one (1) inspection (up to 20” blades).



Required factory maintenance mileage interval such as 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 miles inspections are not covered under this program.
