Houston methodist's 26,000 workers can look forward to some extra cash in march — as long as they get a COVID-19 vaccine.

The eight-hospital system's president and CEO, dr. Marc boom, told employees in an emailed letter last week that they can look forward to a $500 bonus as a "thank you for your perseverance throughout a difficult 2020." eligibility criteria to receive the award include getting a COVID-19 vaccination, "fulfilling our obligation as health care workers to lead the community," he stated.

Houston methodist also gave employees $500 bonuses about six weeks ago for their work during the pandemic, which has killed nearly 35,000 americans. Houston has been hit particularly hard, with nearly 2,700 deaths and more than 247,000 confirmed cases in surrounding harris county.

Employers, including health care providers, face a balancing act in getting their workforces vaccinated. For now, vaccination isn't required for houston methodist employees, but "will be eventually" for most workers, boom wrote. Although many companies are stopping short of making the shots mandatory , they have the right to require immunization for most workers under recently passed federal employment guidelines.

"I think people are more wanting it than not wanting it," said a spokesperson for houston methodist, who received her second dose of the vaccine on monday.

Roughly half of houston methodist's staff immediately signed up to get vaccinated, and thousands more are expected to follow suit, according to roberta schwartz, the hospital system's executive vice president and chief innovation officer.

"there is a small minority of staff who I have spoken to on the floor who are reluctant," schwartz told CBS moneywatch. That includes some who are waiting to see how others fare first, others who have concerns about vaccines generally and then a few with qualms about coronavirus vaccine in particular, she said.

There's other anecdotal evidence of reluctance among some health care workers to get the shots, with dr. Joseph varon, chief of critical care at houston's united memorial medical center recently relaying concerns among nurses in his unit to NPR.

Concerns about COVID-19 vaccines is highest among african americans, according to pew research center, which recently found that fewer than half of black adults planning to get vaccinated, versus 60% of americans overall who intend to get the shots.

But schwartz said houston methodist is seeing strong public interest in the vaccines.

"our phones are inundated with people who want the vaccine. It's hard for us to feel the reluctance in the general society as we're only hearing from people who want it," she said. "even our IT desk got 1,500 phone calls from people wanting this vaccine."

African americans typically have less trust in the medical system than white patients, and often receive worse care, studies have found. In part, that reflects the history of medical mistreatment of black americans, including experimental operations on enslaved black women between 1845 and 1849 by alabama surgeon J. Marion sims as well as the infamous tuskegee institute experiments in the 1930s that examined the progression of syphilis in black men.

Fears that political considerations could overrule safety concerns, particularly when it comes to african americans, drove the nation's oldest black physicians group to form a task force to track the data as drugmakers developed vaccines. The group last month voiced its support for the two vaccines currently being distributed.

Some expert have backed the idea of offering employees a financial incentive for getting inoculated against COVID-19.

"the 'adult' version of the doctor handing out candy to children, fortunately, points toward a solution: pay people who get the shot (or shots, since more than one may be required)," robert litan, a non-resident senior fellow at the brookings institution, said in an august opinion piece for the washington think tank. "how much? I know of no hard science that can answer that question, but my strong hunch is that anything less than $1,000 per person won't do the trick."

But other economists say such payments could backfire, citing studies that suggest offering money in exchange for getting vaccinated could lead them to conclude that the shots are risky.

How much will my company bonus net after taxes?

A bonus from your employer is always a good thing, however, you may want to estimate what you will actually take-home after federal withholding taxes, social security taxes and other deductions are taken out. Use this calculator to help determine your net take-home pay from a company bonus.

Bonus checks after taxes

The arrival of december can leave you excited for not only the winter holidays but also the potential of a work bonus. While some employers will surprise you with one, others will let you know a few weeks in advance that you’re receiving additional funds due to your performance. Unfortunately, the internal revenue service (IRS) takes a portion of bonuses, which is why it’s critical to learn how your bonus checks are taxed, as well as what you’ll receive afterward — which you can do with a bonus check tax calculator.

Why is my bonus considered a supplemental wage?

If you’re receiving your first bonus, you’re probably wondering why the IRS taxes them. The IRS views them as a supplemental wage, alongside back pay, overtime, severance pay and commission. While everyone would prefer if the IRS allowed bonuses to be tax-free, that’s not the case. So, expect to pay taxes on them, but at a different rate than your regular income.

How do the percentage vs. Aggregate method differ?

The next question you probably have is about how your bonus checks are taxed. The answer? It depends, as the IRS uses one of two methods:

  • Percentage: in many cases, the IRS will use the percentage method because your employer will pay your bonus separate from your regular pay. With this tax method, the IRS taxes your bonus at a flat-rate of 25 percent, whether you receive $5000, $500 or $50 — however, if your bonus is more than $1 million, the tax rate is 39.6 percent. This percentage method may seem ideal as it tends to take less out of your bonus, which means more money for you initially, but be prepared to pay more when filing taxes the following year if you are in a higher tax bracket.

  • Aggregate: the other tax for supplemental wages is the aggregate method. If your employer tacks on your bonus to your regular paycheck, the IRS will use this method, which references the withholding tables to determine how much to take out of your wages. In most cases, you lose more of your bonus — compared to the percentage method — because of a higher tax obligation. Depending on the size of your bonus, you may even move up a tax bracket.

Remember, calculate your taxes for your net pay bonus before you spend it. A lot of times, as demonstrated in “national lampoon’s christmas vacation,” we’ll think about what we want to buy and become committed to that purchase before we even receive our bonus, which may be far less than you imagined when taxes come into the picture. With our bonus check tax calculator, you can see your net bonus before you start planning your next purchase.

Amazon warehouse workers say $500 coronavirus bonus is a joke

Amazon warehouse worker sharo sherif said she hasn’t gotten a paycheck since the beginning of may.

It’s not because she’s been fired, but because she had to quarantine after she had COVID-like symptoms, the 23-year-old told digital trends. Money is starting to run out.

Amazon announced this week that it would be sending every full-time worker a one-time bonus of $500 and every part-time worker $250 as part of their coronavirus relief efforts.

But that bonus won’t be enough for workers like sherif to make ends meet, amazon employees told digital trends.

“$500 doesn’t even cover my rent,” sharif told digital trends. “I pay close to $600 [per month] right now.”

Sherif has been working for amazon about two-and-a-half years, first in columbus, ohio, and then in the shakopee warehouse in minnesota, where 88 employees have tested positive for COVID-19. Sherif said her test turned up negative, but then a family member passed away from COVID-19, and her roommate tested positive.

“I had to bring that into work with me,” she said. The warehouse managers said she isn’t allowed back without a doctor’s note.

The outbreak of COVID-19 in the shakopee warehouse was worse than in the surrounding community, and the actual number of COVID cases in that warehouse is suspected to be higher than the reported numbers. Deep distrust has grown between the workers and the managers, with workers alleging the managers are keeping crucial health information from those on the line.

Amazon did not respond to requests for comment about its hazard pay plans or the allegations made by some workers.

The company previously upped all U.S. Workers’ pay by $2; this bonus ended at the beginning of june. It also offered limited unpaid time-off options for those who got sick, and that ended at the beginning of june. Workers told digital trends that the company that workers are now expected to used their accrued time-off hours if they get sick.

“all we want is hazard pay, time-off that works, and transparency,” tyler hamilton, another worker at the same warehouse, told digital trends.

Hamilton, sharif, and william stoltz — another warehouse worker — all agreed it felt like amazon was trying to pay off workers.

Instead of giving them proper hazard pay, the bonus would be an excuse to blunt the effect of a future walkout or strike, hamilton alleged. The motivation was simple: amazon needs staff to help fulfill its orders, and giving people too much time off will make it difficult to meet staffing goals, workers said.

Most amazon workers, stoltz said, live month-to-month. In a normal month, hamilton said he makes around $2,000 working at the shakopee warehouse. For him, $500 would cover one week off of work, if he was even allowed to take it.

Amazon’s leave policies are strict — a worker only has a certain number of paid and unpaid hours they’re allowed to take off in a quarter, and requests for leave can be turned down. If they go beyond that allowed number of hours, they will be terminated.

“it’s not nothing, money is money,” hamilton said. “but it’s not enough. That won’t pay the rent or anything.”

Hamilton and stoltz both compared the bonus to the trump administration’s one-time $1,200 payments that were sent out in april. “it’s not good enough to have a one-time thing,” hamilton said. “this isn’t a single event that’s happened. This is an ongoing crisis and it requires ongoing commitment.”

While amazon has said it will still pay workers who need to take time off when they’re sick, stoltz and hamilton said they had heard of colleagues who had to take time off months ago, and still haven’t been paid.

Sherif said she hasn’t seen any money for the quarantine that amazon has required her to take.

Stoltz told digital trends the $500 was equivalent to roughly two-and-a-half workdays, but not enough to recover from COVID-19 or quarantine without pay. Stoltz said he was saving up to “prepare for when I get the virus and have a long stretch without income.”

“I’ll have to cover bills and have no idea when amazon is going to pay me,” he said.

Virginia lawmakers weigh a $500 bonus for cops, expanded eviction protections and a lifeline for struggling schools

Houston hospital offers workers $500 to get COVID-19 vaccine, 500 dollar bonus.

House and senate budget writers presented their proposed amendments to gov. Ralph northam’s retooled spending plan friday. Here’s a first look at where the two chambers landed on funding for schools, criminal justice reform, evictions and past-due utility bills.

The legislation is on its way to the floor of each chamber for an initial vote then lawmakers from the house and senate will meet to work out the differences between their proposals.

Expungements, body cameras and a $500 bonus for police officers

Both chambers set aside millions to pay for a range of police reforms they’re pursuing, but the amounts reflect their diverging priorities and approaches.

The house budgeted nearly $18 million for its legislative package, much of it to cover the cost of a dramatic expansion of the state’s expungement laws that would automatically seal many criminal records after eight years — something democrats in the chamber say they hope will make it easier for people convicted of crimes to rebuild their lives.

The senate, which has rejected the prospect of automatic expungements and often (though not always) taken a more conservative approach to their reforms, budgeted less than half that amount for its own package of bills: $8 million, the bulk of it going to expand the use of body cameras in the state.

Members of the senate did, however, find funding to send a friendly message to police officers: $500 cash bonuses at a total cost of $18.4 million.

As democratic lawmakers advanced their police reform agenda over the past month, law enforcement groups and republicans have often warned that their proposed bills would be interpreted by police as a demoralizing rebuke of their profession. Senate finance chairwoman janet howell, D-fairfax, said the bonuses are a way to show support for the profession while moving forward with reform.

The house included no such appropriation in their proposal and so far there’s been no word on what members think about the idea. But democratic leaders in both chambers have strongly objected to any suggestions that they back protesters' calls to defund the police — a rallying cry GOP lawmakers have been eager to link them to after a failed attempt to cut state aid to local police by del. Lee carter, D-manassas.

House lawmakers friday axed language in a bill proposed by the senate that proposed limiting state funding to law enforcement agencies that fail to obtain professional accreditation or participate in mandatory data collection program.

“I don’t want the virginia public to believe we want to cut police funding,” said del. Mark sickles, D-fairfax, who serves as vice chair of the house appropriations committee.

A lifeline for struggling schools

Proposed state education spending has changed dramatically since the end of the 2020 session, when democratic lawmakers proudly announced they had restored it to pre-2008 levels. But amid growing financial concerns from virginia’s public schools, both the house and senate budgets include millions of dollars to help K-12 education weather the pandemic.

Spending plans from both chambers include roughly $95.2 million for public schools in fiscal year 2021 to offset an expected decline in state sales tax revenue — one percent of which flows to local school divisions as basic state aid. The one-time funding will come from profits generated by “gray machines,” or electronic skill games, which were banned at the end of the 2020 session but granted a temporary reprieve when gov. Ralph northam proposed taxing them to raise money for a coronavirus relief fund.

Plus, cash back cards are offering higher and higher bonuses to compete with other rewards currencies – even up to $500 or more.

Right now, $500 (or higher) intro bonuses are limited to business credit cards – but offers change regularly, so a personal card boasting an inflated bonus could be around the corner. Personal cards, including the capital one® savor® cash rewards credit card, have offered intro bonuses up to $500 in their history. Though the sign-up offer on the savor is not at its peak, keep an eye out for future limited-time offers on this and other cards.

Which cards are currently offering $500 introductory bonuses?

At the moment, only small business credit cards are offering intro bonuses of $500 or more. Take a look at four current offers below:

Cardintroductory offer
ink business cash® credit card $750 if you spend $7,500 in first 3 months
ink business unlimited® credit card $750 if you spend $7,500 in first 3 months
capital one spark cash for business$500 if you spend $4,500 in first 3 months
U.S. Bank business cash rewards world elite™ mastercard®$500 if you spend $4,500 in first 150 days

As you can see, each of these generous intro offers requires a fairly high spend threshold to reach it. Before you sign up for one of these cards, ensure you can spend enough to earn the bonus without overextending your budget.

Who is eligible to earn these bonuses?

Before jumping at one of these generous offers, you should ensure you are eligible to earn the bonus. Issuers often have restrictions on who can take home a sign-up bonus.

For example, the ink business cash and ink business unlimited cards from chase are subject to the 5/24 rule. This means if you’ve opened five or more credit cards with any issuer in the last 24 months, you likely won’t qualify for either card.

On the bright side, chase business cards will not count against your 5/24 standing for future applications.

For the capital one spark cash card and U.S. Bank business cash rewards card, the sign-up bonus is limited to new account holders. If you currently have or have previously had one of these cards, you might not be eligible for a new bonus on the same card.

Cash bonuses vs. Points bonuses

The possibilities for a $500 sign-up bonus are endless – allowing you to book a trip, buy yourself a special something, offset your next major bill and so much more. It is easy to see how an extra $500 is valuable – but is it the best offer you can find?

The short answer is no. Points-based sign-up bonuses can offer incredible potential value when you redeem rewards strategically. Because the value of points and miles shifts depending on how you spend them, you can often get much more than the estimated cash value of a sign-up bonus by redeeming your points for well-priced flights, hotels or other promotions.

For example, check out some top points-based introductory offers and our estimated value. At first glance, the following bonuses seem to offer a similar value to a $500 cash bonus. But when you redeem your points for travel, they can actually take you much further.

But there is a big drawback – point bonuses are typically only worth their full value when you redeem them for a specific kind of purchase. If a card offers an 80,000-point bonus – but points are only worth a full 1 cent each when redeemed for travel – then that bonus is only ideal for cardholders who already spend a significant amount on travel. If you’d sacrifice half the value of your bonus offer to redeem it for another kind of purchase – such as a statement credit to cover your bills – then you are better off opting for a more flexible cash back offer.

Should you sign up for a $500 bonus offer?

Before jumping at a high bonus offer, you should always consider the spend requirement. If you will have to charge more than you can afford to pay off in order to earn the bonus, it might not be worth it.

Additionally, cash bonuses don’t always offer as much potential value as a points-based introductory bonus. Consider how you want to spend your rewards and which card’s earning rate works best for you before you apply.

Houston methodist, a texas hospital system with more than 26,000 employees, is offering a $500 bonus to workers if they get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Houston methodist employees are eligible for a "hope bonus" in march to thank them for their work last year, marc boom, president and CEO of houston methodist, wrote in an email to staff last week.

"eligibility criteria will include getting a COVID-19 vaccination, fulfilling our obligation as health care workers to lead the community," boom wrote.

Boom noted that the COVID-19 vaccine is not mandated for employees right now, but will be eventually.

"this bonus is a thank you for your perseverance throughout a difficult 2020 as well as something to look forward to, to provide hope, during the next couple of challenging months," boom wrote.

The hospital system began administering the vaccine to employees on dec. 15.

"about 55% of houston methodist's 26,000 employees have received at least first dose of pfizer vaccine and thousands more scheduled," a hospital spokesperson told CNN.

Houston methodist employees also received a $500 bonus in november to thank them for their work during the coronavirus pandemic.

'extraordinary thank you': H-E-B announces $500 bonus for work during pandemic

Houston hospital offers workers $500 to get COVID-19 vaccine, 500 dollar bonus.

On wednesday, H-E-B told employees they would each receive a $500 bonus for their work during the pandemic.

Mark mulligan /staff photographer

H-E-B employees were feeling grateful — and inspiring a bit of jealousy— after the company announced a $500 bonus.

On wednesday, the san antonio-based grocer told employees they would each receive the money for their work during the pandemic.

Craig boyan, H-E-B's president, said the workforce had shown grace and compassion "in the face of many challenges this year."

"as we look toward the holiday season and to 2021, it’s with immense pride and great excitement we celebrate our partners and their families for the passion and heart they exhibit every day to texans across our great state," boyan said.

All employees, both full-time and part-time, will receive the bonus via direct deposit on friday. The award will be issued across the company's formats and work locations.

In a virtual meeting wednesday morning, chief people officer tina james shook a cowbell as she announced the "extraordinary thank you" to employees, which she said would come out to just over $350 after taxes are taken out. The company also dished out socks and a T-shirt.

H-E-B workers took to social media to share the news.

One twitter user wrote, "I work for the best company and that's undebatable." another said, "when heb takes better care of you than our government >."

Others who don't work for H-E-B were wishing they did on wednesday.

"so what I’m seeing is. 1st round of drinks on my heb friends," one person wrote.

Earlier this year, H-E-B temporarily bumped the pay of hourly employees by $2 an hour as they worked to keep shelves stocked.
